How the GRE practice test is scored

GRE scoring is unusual, and understanding it changes how you prepare. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored on a scale of 130 to 170 in one-point increments, giving a combined total between 260 and 340. There is no penalty for wrong answers — never leave a question blank. Analytical Writing is scored separately on a 0–6 scale and does not enter the combined number.

Since the shorter GRE launched, the exam runs about 1 hour 58 minutes: one 30-minute essay, then two Verbal sections (27 questions total) and two Quant sections (27 questions total). The second section of each measure is adaptive — how you perform on the first section determines the difficulty pool, and the scoring ceiling, of the second. What counts as a good GRE score for a master’s program?

The honest answer: it depends on the program, not the university — engineering, economics and data-science programs weigh Quant hard, while humanities programs read Verbal first. As broad orientation for Latin American applicants: a combined 300 makes you admissible at a wide range of solid programs, 310–315 is competitive at strong public universities, 320+ puts you in range for top-30 programs, and 325+ with a strong Quant score opens conversations about assistantships and fellowships — the funding packages that can cover tuition and pay a monthly stipend. That last point is the one most applicants miss: at many US universities, graduate funding decisions look at the same GRE score the admissions committee saw. A few extra points can literally be worth a tuition waiver.

GRE quantitative exercises: what to practice

Searching for GRE quantitative exercises or a GRE quantitative PDF? Know what you’re actually practicing for. GRE Quant covers four content areas — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis — but the question formats are what trip up first-time test takers, and no amount of math review fixes a format problem:

GRE Verbal: the vocabulary myth

Verbal Reasoning is three question types: text completion (fill the blanks using sentence logic), sentence equivalence (pick the two words that produce sentences with the same meaning), and reading comprehension. Non-native speakers assume Verbal is a vocabulary exam and grind word lists. Partly true — but the higher-value skill is reading the sentence’s internal logic: contrast markers, cause-and-effect, and tone tell you what the blank needs before you look at a single answer choice. Every free GRE practice test worth your time in 2026

A free GRE practice test is only useful if it resembles the exam you’ll actually sit. Plenty of third-party quizzes online predate the shorter GRE format and will train you for a test that no longer exists. This is the short, honest list — and the role each resource should play in your prep.

What about Analytical Writing?

The shorter GRE has one 30-minute essay — «Analyze an Issue» — scored separately from 0 to 6 in half-point steps. It doesn’t touch your 260–340 number, which is why this diagnostic skips it, but writing-heavy programs read it, and a score under 3.5 raises questions for non-native speakers. How often should you take a full-length GRE practice test?

Every two to three weeks during active prep, with targeted domain work between sittings — and a full error review after each one, which is where the points actually come from.
